Hello;
So I attempted to make my first modification to a miniature. The miniature was holding a knife up in the air, I wanted to replace the knife with a spell effect thus turning them into a combat wizard rather than a rogue. I found a spell effect I liked, pulling it into the picture and sized it to fit over the blade. Looked like it was going to work. Printed him out and found he had gone very dark. Like can't see details dark. Like looking like a dark grey specter dark. I didn't actively adjust the colors. So I am wondering if it has to do with my somehow messing up the layers?
Any thoughts or ideas would be great.
Thank You

Can you post the picture file here?
What application did you use? Photoshop? GIMP? Something else?

It would be good to know what program you are using!

I used the basic Paint program that came with my computer and printed it out on the color printer at work. I have sense read a lot of folks use GIMP or Photoshop. So I am assuming the basic paint program lacks what is needed to keep the colors steady. I believe it is not the printer because the prints I did of the normal PDFs seemed fine. So I am going to pick up GIMP and start the long clime to learning how to use it. EDIT: First Attempt deleted and second attempt uploaded.... Second Attempt

My First Attempt....I'm glad it is working better for you.

Me too. Now to learn to use this GIMP better. So many things that do not feel intuitive.
Clearly layers and selections are important. I can see that. :-)

So I am assuming the basic paint program lacks what is needed to keep the colors steady. I'd be surprised, as these days (well, since 1990ish), Microsoft Paint has been able to support something like 63 million colours, so I doubt it's Paint being the problem. How did you edit the image? As far as I am aware, MS Paint can't open PDFs. GIMP can import them, then re-export to PDF, but if the image originally created as a vector image, say in Photoshop, then when it is imported to GIMP, it will be a bitmap/raster image format. This will change the quality (though not noticeably, though) but it shouldn't change any colours. EDIT: Ok, here is my first try in GIMP. Not sure how good it is, but at least it seems to work. My First Attempt....That looks OK to me, well the figure does, the thing in his hand does look dark brown though - is this intentional?

Well I figure at this point it doesn't matter why it didn't work in Paint. I pulled the same figure into GIMP the same way and it worked.
I re-did the spell effect. The link is above, the second try replaced the first.
I think it came out much better. Not so small and brown.

I see what you mean.
I think the problem might have been the "mode" of the original image. If it has a limited 256 colour palette, it might not contain the colours you need. Still, even in MS Paint, it is possible to change the mode and get the full 63 million colour palette.
But, As you say, you're into GIMP and are happy with the results.

But, As you say, you're into GIMP and are happy with the results. I have been using both in my new path of discovery. I always loved how easy it was to use Paint back when I was creating my own 15mm stuff. (I have posted some of the sets I created over on the Carboard Warriors forum). They are all flats, no 2.5D or 3D models. I figure I now have two tools that have different uses. GIMP seems to have some abilities that Paint does not, but at the same time GIMP is harder to use in some ways. I suspect both will remain in my tool box. I used paint to remove the handgun from one of the Space figures and he turned out good enough. Once printed and on the table he will look fine I think. Space Police in the Outlands

I know of others who can bounce the same image through two or more applications to use the easiest features of each.

I am finding that is true for me. I think that is one of the things that I didn't expect but love about your sets. Not only the ability to switch colors with the layers but that some offer weapon or head variants as well. Makes them fun to try different combos out.

I am struggling with scaling. If I am in GIMP and have set the new sheet to 300 pixels per inch, about how many pixels tall would a normal human figure be?
I have played around and I am not be getting the math right for sure.
